Welcome to Sohomouse

If the Devil Wears Prada, then let me be your personal guide to your journey through Hell. Think Virgil to your Dante, but much less eloquent. That analogy sounded a lot better in my head.

Sohomouse is my own little corner of the internet where I talk about fashion, runways, and designers. I'm not a professional critic — just a student of HauteLeMode, who spends far too much time watching YouTube in her pjs.

Here we'll walk through the circles of fashion hell together: the not-so-hidden ugly secrets, the thrill and terror of the sample sale, and the eternal question of why we fall in love with things that cost more than rent.

Let's just say if I ever win the lottery, there will be signs. I'll finally own that temperature-controlled archive of my favourite runway shows — every Comme des Garçons paper doll look, every Dior by Galliano, and the Alexander McQueen 2004 skull scarf dress naturally. You best believe that's what I would save in the case of a fire. Until then, pictures will have to do.

Ready to follow me through the 9 circles? Grab your best heels (or sneakers — no judgment, a girl's got to walk). I'll be your guide. Ignore my wobbling in kitten heels.

Naturally this is one of my pet peeves, so I’m going to bust some myths, and some balls - after all, many of the inaccuracies were originally perpetuated by Victorian men. Clearly the most knowledgeable demographic on the female body.

So, first myth: corsets were invented by Catherine de Medici. WatchMojo, please do your research and for God’s sake list your sources - oh wait, you have none!

The corset in fact was developed … Read more

It’s no secret at this point that I’ve reached what can only be described as a slightly unhealthy obsession with ugly shoes and it’s begun to feel like a Problem™. I like my shoes the way many women like their men: just a little bit ugly. For the past few years, I’ve been yearning with a fervour that would make Mr Darcy blush for a pair of Tabis. Two pairs, really — if I’m being honest — a boot and a flat. But I’ll settle for one. A girl’s still got to eat.

And apparently, I’m not the only victim, with duck-webbed boots and barefoot shoes taking the internet — and my FYP — by storm. So, why has our society become so enamoured with shoes that look … Read more
